Cloud Storage made to trust
ownCloud.online is a professional managed cloud service for secure file management and collaboration. The platform combines the convenience of modern public-cloud solutions with the data sovereignty of a private cloud.
All data is stored exclusively on German servers and is therefore subject to strict German data protection law – with no access by foreign authorities. Unlike US providers, ownCloud.online is not subject to the CLOUD Act.
The platform is operated and further developed by BW-Tech GmbH in Brühl near Heidelberg – a managed-cloud specialist with comprehensive infrastructure and security expertise.
Our History
Milestones & Development
From the open-source idea, through the launch as a managed service, to independent further development by BW-Tech.
Frank Karlitschek founds the open-source project ownCloud. For the first time, the software makes it possible to run fully self-managed cloud storage. Over 200 million people worldwide use ownCloud technology.
ownCloud.online launches as a hosted managed cloud service – developed in cooperation with ownCloud GmbH. From the outset, BW-Tech GmbH provides the highly available German data center infrastructure, ensuring data sovereignty on German soil.
BW-Tech operates and secures the infrastructure. The platform obtains ISO 27001 certification. ownCloud GmbH merges with Kiteworks and focuses its development on ownCloud Infinite Scale. BW-Tech gradually takes over maintenance of the classic PHP stack.
BW-Tech GmbH takes over operation, further development and marketing of ownCloud.online. For existing customers nothing changes operationally – only billing now runs directly through BW-Tech. At the same time, BW-Tech takes over maintenance of the ownCloud PHP stack and secures its long-term future.
All Symfony components updated to version 7.3, SwiftMailer replaced by Symfony Mailer, security-relevant vulnerabilities fixed (incl. CVE-2025-53829, CVE-2025-53827). The source code is available as an open-source project on GitHub. BW-Tech thus secures the future of the ownCloud PHP ecosystem.
